Two different cold-weather failures get confused with each other. One is fuel turning to wax. The other is an engine too cold and too stiff to start. Different problems, different products.
The verdict up front
Additive prevents gelled fuel; a block heater helps a cold engine turn over. Neither substitutes for the other. Anti-gel works before the fuel gets cold, not after, and once wax has plugged the filter you are looking at a de-gel treatment and time, not prevention. A block heater warms the oil and coolant overnight so a cold diesel cranks, and it does nothing whatever for the fuel in your tanks.

Choose the anti-gel additive if
You are running into cold country and you fuelled somewhere warm. Fuel sold in cold regions is usually already blended for the local climate, and the fuel in your tanks from three states south is not. Treat before the temperature drops. Adding it to a tank that has already waxed does not undo the wax, and that is the mistake people make once.
Choose the block heater if
You park somewhere with a plug and mornings are cold enough that the engine complains. A magnetic heater on the oil pan is the cheap version and it works, warming the oil so it flows and the starter has a chance. Plug it in a few hours before you need it rather than all night, since running it for twelve hours mostly heats the outdoors.
What gelling actually is
Diesel contains paraffin wax that stays dissolved until the temperature drops through the cloud point, at which point it starts crystallising and clogging the fuel filter. The truck usually runs fine and then loses power as the filter plugs. Carrying a spare fuel filter through the winter is worth more than any additive, because that is the part that stops you.
Do not use gasoline additives or improvised fixes
Adding gasoline to diesel to prevent gelling is an old piece of advice that damages the injection system and creates a fire risk. Use a product made for the job, follow the dose on the container, and if the truck is under warranty check what the engine manufacturer permits before pouring anything into the tank.
